Mildred E. Dean

May 10, 1921 ~ January 20, 2017 (age 95) 95 Years Old

Mildred Ethel Marcot Dean (Marcotrigiano) was born in New York City, New York on May 10, 1921. She graduated from Montclair High School in New Jersey in 1939.

When she was 21 years old, she travelled from New Jersey to Oakland, California with her sister Nancy, both employed as civilians working for the government during World War II.

It was in Oakland that she met her husband, Jerry Dean, who had returned from England, where he had served in the Army-Air Force during World War II. They were married in 1946 in New Jersey and were married for 49 years before Jerry’s death in 1995.

Mildred was the proud mother of six children: Jerelyn, Jacalyn, Jocelyn, Gerald Jr., Dennis and Marianne. She is survived by Jacalyn, Jocelyn, Gerald and Marianne. Both Jerelyn and Dennis preceded her in death in 2003 and 2010.

Mildred was the oldest girl in her family, following the births of her cherished older brothers, Guy, Neal and Michael Marcot. She also had two adored younger sisters, Nancy Anstey and Olga Testa. Her youngest sister, Olga is the only living survivor of her family, of her parents Concetta and Abel Marcot, who were both born in Italy.

Mildred was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother. In later years, all who loved her called her Nonna. She is the grandmother of Paul Sullivan, Michael Sass, Gina Ricci, Cristina Alsip, Angela Casella, Christopher Hauge, Juliana Hauge, Sabina Nunn, Spencer Dean, Stewart Dean and Simon Dean. She also leaves her beloved eight great-grandchildren, Jacob, Evan, Noah and Elijah Ricci, Jonathan and Nicholas Sass and Sophia and Clara Casella. She is also beloved mother in law to Rafael Nunn and Gino Sass of Kingston, NY. Nothing was more important to her than family.

Over the course of her life, raising children and being a homemaker were her pride and joy. Her strong Catholic faith and Italian heritage were an integral part of her life. She was staunch and supportive in every way, especially during challenges and hardships. Mildred loved life and people and was loved by everyone who knew her. She had many jobs over time, with her favorite being a teacher’s assistant in Kindergarten at Sacred Heart School. She also volunteered as a Pink Lady at Mount Diablo Hospital in Concord California for many years and she loved this job!

Mildred was always available to love and support her family, friends and neighbors. Her outgoing personality, kindness and helpfulness was also ever present. She loved music, dance and get-togethers. She loved to act silly and have fun, which was a delight to both her children and grandchildren. She loved learning and she attended college at Diablo Valley College in Concord later in life. Today she has family around the country, including her beloved California, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, Florida, Arizona, Pennsylvania, Missouri and Alabama.

At age 86, Mildred was hit by a car as a pedestrian in New York and sustained serious injuries. She suffered greatly from the accident, but surprised us all with her recovery. She fought hard to regain her mobility despite constant pain. Those of us who were privileged to know her and call her our own, will always be inspired by her. We will continue to aspire to emulate her caring, loving and kind ways.
