Sandra McKean

Sandra died peacefully in her Concord home of 59 years on March 29. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 62 years, Marvin McKean. She is survived by her three children, Kevin McKean (wife Kim), Timothy McKean (wife Kathy), and Kelli McKean Peterman (husband Russ); as well as her sister, Sharon Brooks; ten grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, all of whom brought her much joy and pride.

Sandra was born in Bellefontaine, OH. While her early childhood was spent in the Midwest, she moved to Pittsburg, CA when she was thirteen, and ultimately settled in Concord where she would attend and graduate from Mt. Diablo High School in 1954. It was there she met Marvin, as well as many life-long, cherished friends. Sandra married Marvin in 1956 at Queen of All Saints Catholic Church in Concord, where they built a home, raised a family, and lived out their years together.

If home is where the heart is, Sandra shared her heart with many. Holidays, birthdays, graduations, potlucks with friends – Sandra worked tirelessly to ensure her family and friends were welcomed and nourished in her home. On the weekends you would find Sandra working in her yard sun-up to sun-down or at an antique store looking for the next piece that would make her home special and unique. Her home was where she was comfortable and safe, so Friday nights she would settle-in to watch a horror movie with her boys that always included homemade popcorn and Pepsi.

She looked forward to August vacations in Lake Tahoe, BBQ’s at Contra Costa Country Club, weekends in Carmel, and annual adventures with her best friends from high school.  She had boundless energy and enjoyed sports. She was a runner - completed a half marathon, trained to swim 1-mile 4 days a week, and would ride her bike on a 13-mile round trip to work at Heather Farm Community Center where she worked as an administrator for 17-years. Thoughtful and loving, never a holiday or special occasion would pass without a card, See’s Candy, and gift from Sandra/Mom/Grandma.

A memorial service celebrating Sandra’s life is on April 20, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at Queen of All Saints Catholic Church in Concord. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be made to the Concord Historical Society (P.O. Box 404, Concord, CA 94522).
