MARY ISABELL STRAIT STRATTON
March 15, 1923 – October 31, 2018
Resident of Concord, California
Mother, grandmother and great grandmother of Champions, the original "uniform mom" of the Concord Blue Devils Drum & Bugle Corps, proud WWII Veteran, past Commander of the Concord American Legion Post 171, avid historian and archivist, Mary passed away quietly on October 31, 2018 in Concord.
Born Mary Isabell Strait in Clare, Iowa in 1923, Mary proudly served as a parachute rigger in the US Navy WAVES during WWII. She and her husband relocated to Concord in 1946, where they raised 5 children and operated R.L. Stratton Ditching for over 20 years. Known as “Mom Stratton” to hundreds of members of the Concord Blue Devils, Mary saw 3 generations of her family become World Champions with that organization. She was an active member of American Legion Post 171--serving as Commander and Vice Commander--and helped administer the ROC Auto Repair program at College Park High School for many years. She also volunteered at the Senior Services Center at Mt. Diablo Hospital, where all of her children were born and her eldest daughter, Kathy, served as a Registered Nurse for over 30 years.
Mary will be dearly missed by her children, Melvin Stratton (Patty), Kathy Shindelus (Larry), Shirley Dorritie (Frank), Christina Stratton (Bruce), and Robert Stratton; grandchildren Paul, Matt, Benjamin, Christopher, and Nathan; and great grandchildren Shelby and Melanie. Mary was preceded in death by her grandson Robert James.
Private Committal with Military Funeral Honors will be held at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorial contributions to the Blue Devils Performing Arts Scholarship Fund, Hospice East Bay, American Diabetes Association, or the charity of your choice.
