Mary Jeanette (Young) Ehmke passed away on Wednesday, 12/13/2017, surrounded by her family and friends in Concord, California.
The daughter of Willard and Essie Young, Mary was born on 11/9/1933 in Wellsville, New York. She graduated from Fredonia State, New York, where she met her husband, David K. Ehmke. Mary and Dave were married for 62 years.
Mary was an elementary school teacher for 41 years, 36 of which were at Mountain View Elementary School in Concord. Her students recall her as their most memorable teacher.
Mary was a member of the First Presbyterian Church (Concord), California Reading Association, Philanthropic Educational Organization, and California Teachers Association. She enjoyed teaching, singing, book clubs, cooking, crossword puzzles, and traveling.
Mary will be remembered for kindness, generosity, sense of humor, flair, cheerfulness, and how she loved the simple pleasures of life. She made friends wherever she went.
She is survived by her husband, David; four children: Lee (Sue), Starr Lieber (Ken), Don, and Heather; four grandchildren: Shawna (Nate), Justin (Kara), Kelly (Eric), Tenaj; seven great-grandchildren: Damien, Grace, Alessio, Victoria, Aubrey, Mason, and Walter; and five nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her brother, Charles Young.
The Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, 12/23/2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church at Colfax and Salvio in Concord, California.
