Joyce Pynn

December 9, 1924 ~ October 25, 2021 (age 96) 96 Years Old

Tribute

With heavy hearts, the children of Joyce Ione Pynn (Gehlert), announce the peaceful death of
their mother on October 25, 2021, age 96, at her home in Concord, California. We believe she
went to be with the God she loved and to a long-awaited reunion with her husband of sixty-five
years, Verne, who predeceased her in 2011. She missed him greatly and they are at last
together again.
Joyce is survived by her three children, Craig Pynn, of Madison, Wisconsin, Ward Pynn, and
Susan (Sue) Somers, both of Concord California. Her six grandchildren, Geoffrey Pynn, Elisabeth
Himmelman, Justin and Aaron Riedmiller, Melissa and Abigail Pynn, and three greatgrandchildren,
Ivan and Lydia Pynn, and Jens Himmelman all remember their grandmother and
great-grandmother with abundant fondness.
Born on December 9, 1924, and raised in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, Joyce served with the
Civil Aeronautics Administration at three airport locations in the Midwest during the Second
World War. She married Verne Pynn in May 1945. They moved to the San Francisco Bay Area,
where Joyce was a homemaker. They raised their children in Concord, and then enjoyed the
arrival of grandchildren and great grandchildren. After Verne retired from his law practice in the
early 1980s, they enjoyed their retirement years together, traveling widely.
A life-long Christian of unwavering faith, Joyce was active in the Hollywood Presbyterian
Church, Lake Avenue (Pasadena) Church, the Evangelical Free Church of Walnut Creek, and the
Concord Bible Church, where she sang in the choir. Joyce participated in numerous Bible studies
and small groups from the early 1950s on up to the past several years while living at Carlton
Senior Living in Concord.
