John J. Ouimet, 92, co-founder of Ouimet Bros. Concord Funeral Chapel died at his home surrounded by family on September 1, 2021. John was born in Dewittville, Quebec, Canada to the late Richard & Dora O’Neil Ouimet on May 29, 1929. He attended schools in Canada until the family moved to Chateaugay, New York. John graduated from Chateaugay High School in 1950 and was drafted into the United States Air Force. He was stationed in Florida, Greenland and Cambria, California serving honorably as a radio operator during the Korean Conflict. While serving in Cambria, John met the love of his life, Sharon and they married in 1956.

After John graduated from San Francisco College of Mortuary Science in 1955, he worked at Chapel of Highlands in Milbrae and Darling – Fischer Chapel in San Jose. John, along with his wife Sharon, founded Lough – Ouimet Concord Funeral Chapel in 1958 in downtown Concord. In 1971 John’s brother Don and his wife Bea joined John and Sharon in Ouimet Bros. Concord Funeral Chapel.

John was a charter member of Knights of Columbus Concord Council #6038, a founding member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, active member of Concord Elks Lodge #1994, Past President of Clayton Valley Lions Club, longtime member of Concord Chamber of Commerce, Concord Historical Society and Wahoo Tribe, Improved Order of Redmen.

He was an Oakland A’s season ticket holder, enjoyed playing hockey with his brother Don and helping coach the younger players. In later years, John enjoyed being with his sons car racing. He and Sharon enjoyed traveling in their retirement! John was a perfectionist in his profession, bringing comfort to so many families who were grieving the loss of a loved one. He helped many young Embalmers and Funeral Directors to perfect their skills.

John is survived by his wife Sharon of 65 years, sons John R. (Jan), Tim (Shari), daughter Kathy (Roger); grandchildren Amanda Hayford, Steven Ouimet, Melissa Rieger, Chris Ouimet, Erik Rieger, Danielle Ouimet, Chelsea Ouimet and Giulia Sarti, 5 great-grandchildren as well as his brother, Don & his wife Bea Ouimet, numerous nieces and nephews and many dear friends.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 7, 2021 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 3966 Chestnut Avenue, Concord, CA 94519 followed with a Funeral Liturgy at 7:00 p.m. A Rite of Committal will be held on Wednesday, September 8, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, 5810 Midway Road, Dixon, CA 95620.
