Gloria T. Whittaker, a 39 year resident of Clayton, CA passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, December 25, 2018 surrounded by loved ones. In her 83 years she touched many lives with her love, generosity, creativity, and vivacious spirit.
Gloria was born on May 31, 1935 to Manuel Hernandez and Dorothy Cardinale Hernandez. She graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1953 and married her high school sweetheart Bob Whittaker in 1955. Together, they enjoyed 63 years of love, family, friends, and adventures.
She was an accomplished home chef, gardener, bridge player, and golfer. She was a world traveler who loved cruises, the theatre, interior design, shopping, and volunteering. She was always happiest when entertaining family and friends.
As a parishioner of St. Bonaventure Catholic Church, Gloria delighted in serving several ministries including teaching Faith Formation for 16 years and most recently, creating floral designs for the church as part of the Art and Environment Ministry.
She established Nature’s Designs Boutique Florist on Clayton Road, Concord in 1982. She owned and operated her shop for 20 years providing full service floral design, live plants, designer baskets, original art work, and gifts. Her specialty was weddings, bringing every bride’s vision into reality.
She was a promoter of local small businesses and served as President of the Executives Association of Contra Costa County as well as Director of the Contra Costa Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Gloria is survived by her loving husband, Bob Whittaker, devoted children Jim Whittaker (Peter Fitzgerald) of Washington, DC, Cory Whittaker (Pamela) of Hoboken, NJ, Lynn Nicks (Chris) of Danville, CA, and brother Victor Hernandez (Sue) of Beaverton, OR. She was predeceased by her sister Dolores Martinez.
She was the loving grandmother of Adam Whittaker, Lindsey Whittaker, Colton Howe-Nicks (Tim), Cassidy Nicks, Christin O’Cuddehy, and Alonzo Cudd (Reagan). She is also survived by great grandchildren Paxton, Maddox, Addison, and Holden.
Friends and family are invited to the Memorial Service and celebration of her life on Thursday, January 3, 2019 at 10:30 am at St. Bonaventure Church, 5562 Clayton Rd, Concord, CA 94521.
