Gary was baptized at an early age at Zion Gate M.B. Church. There he enjoyed participating in Sunday School and being an active member of the Usher board. He attended school in the Kankakee School District before joining the U.S. Army. He was honorably discharged after 4 years at which point he chose to spend time with his grandparents in Mississippi. There he enjoyed helping his grandfather on the farm and learned how to be handy around the house. His grandmother taught him how to be a good cook. He loved being with his grandparents because they always shared their wisdom and further helped him to become a self-sufficient individual.
Gary was certainly a man of many talents. When he returned to Kankakee, he decided to go to beauty school and learn the skill of hair dressing. There he met the mother of his first two children. Because he grew up watching his mother care for the elderly, he gravitated toward seniors. Caregiving came natural to him and he was very good at it. When he decided there was more for him to learn and explore he moved to California. There he met and married his beloved Chuchi and began his wonderful adult life in california.
