Tribute

Evelyn “Bok” Mendoza Yu
Resident of San Francisco, California, USA
January 2, 1951 – June 2, 2021

Atty. Evelyn Mendoza Yu of Ormoc City and Quezon City, Philippines passed away last Wednesday after battling Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease for many years.
Evelyn was born and raised in Ormoc City, Philippines. During her college years, she was a pioneering member of Alpha Phi Omega – Philippines, Incorporated, Alpha Upsilon Chapter. She graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Accountancy from the University of San Jose Recoletos – Cebu City and became a Certified Public Accountant. Evelyn worked in Ormoc City and Iligan City before moving to Fairview Quezon City. She worked with the Commission on Audit (COA), Philippines. Evelyn was sent to the Development Academy of the Philippines to study and she also worked collaboratively with a team to upgrade/computerize the Commission’s entire database system. As an achiever, Evelyn pursued her master's degree in Public Administration from Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila.  Soon after, she received her Bachelor of Law degree from Jose Rizal University. While working at COA Evelyn passed the bar exam and earned her license to practice law. She then became part of COA’s legal team. Evelyn immigrated to the US in 1997. In early 2000 she worked with Securitas Security Services in California.  Evelyn worked at the City and County of San Francisco Public Utilities Commission from 2005 until she retired in 2015
As the youngest of ten, Evelyn always lived life her way, always prioritizing family. She also valued education highly, followed by the many friendships she developed over the years. Having borne no children of her own, Tita Belen’s nieces, nephews, grand nieces/grand nephews, relatives and friends became the recipients of her full loving care and generosity. Even from a distance, over the years, she collectively and sometimes individually pampered them, always encouraging them to push themselves to greater heights. Evelyn tried keeping tabs of individual endeavors applauding, cheering and rewarding us at each milestone. She loved spending time wining and dining with her family and friends. She was a compassionate and  genuine friend with a very generous heart.
Evelyn is survived by her brother Oscar and wife Nenita Yu, her sisters Amelia and husband Jesus Suazo, Thelma Whitright and Teresita Yu, along with her many beloved nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her brothers Luisito Yu, Alfredo Yu, Ernesto Mendoza and sisters Remedios Suarez, and Adelaida Orbiso and parents, Jose Tio Sing Yu and Pilar Cueva Mendoza.
The family wishes to express heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Abel Care Home 2 of Concord, CA, for the attentive care they provided to our Tita, Evelyn.
“Tita Bok, your memory will always be treasured in our hearts and passed on to our posterity. Your name will serve as a beacon to us to always push forward! Thank you so much, know that we love you and always will.” Janeth Yu Orbiso Advincula-go.
