Evelyn Adlaid Martin

Our beloved matriarch, Evelyn A. Martin, died on October 12, 2023 at the age of 100 years and 8 months with loved ones and caregivers at her side. She lived a long, beautiful, and full life. Evelyn was an amazing mother, a classy lady , and a great friend to many. She was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia but spent most of her adult life in San Francisco. She spent her last 20 years in Concord.

Evelyn was a beautiful woman with an effervescent personality and a 1000 watt smile. She was also adventurous and a trail blazer.  After World War II, Evelyn worked in downtown San Francisco. She was the first black sales person to work at the San Francisco J.C. Penny's store.  Her next job was for the San Francisco Housing Authority. She worked her way up the organization and eventually became a Housing Specialist.  This also became a stepping stone for Evelyn transitioning to a totally new career. She became a licensed Real Estate Agent and Broker-Owner of SMS Realty located on Haight Street. She diversified her business ownerships by opening Tropical Haight Bar on Haight Street and Atlanta West Barbecue in the Bay View area.

Evelyn is preceded  in death by her mother Katie Travis and her siblings Ruth, Harold, Clarence and Agnes. She is survived by her children Harriett Ostermann (and spouse, Steve), James Norris Jr. (and spouse, Barbara) and Yolanda Jaggers (and spouse ,William -deceased) ; her grand children Michelle, Grayson, Elliott and Nathan; great granddaughter Sydney; many nieces and nephews ;her friend and partner Gregory Salas.

Evelyn was a truly special person who will be greatly missed.
