With family by her side, Elfriede Gibson died peacefully at home at the age of 87.
Elfi, as she was known to family and friends, was born in St. Wolfgang, Austria, to Georg and Hedwig Lorenz. After graduating high school and studying music at the Mozarteum Conservatory in Salzburg, she met the love of her life, Lee; they were married in November of 1949.
In the early years of their marriage they were stationed throughout the world, but always had a special place in their hearts for the Bay Area. Upon Lee’s retirement from the military, they returned here to make it their permanent home.
Elfi worked in the field of education for over 10 years, teaching English as a Second Language. She enjoyed learning languages and continued well into her late 70’s. She loved music and singing, participating for many years in the DVC Masterworks Chorale and her parish choir. Her other great joy was baking for family and friends.
Elfi and Lee loved to travel and in retirement, journeyed the world together again, combining their other interests including music, history and art.
Most important to Elfi was her family. Elfi was preceded in death by her husband Lee. She is survived by her children: Carol Gibson, Hal (Diann) Gibson, Don Gibson and Gloria (Kevin) Kolder; grandchildren: Armen Ayvazian, Ann Carbajal, Matthew Gibson, Luke Gibson, Parker Darling, great-granddaughter Amy Carbajal and her faithful dog Rodney.
A memorial service will be held at St. Catherine’s of Sienna Parish, 606 Mellus Street, Martinez, on Saturday, November 17th, 10:00 am. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Elfi’s life.
