Charles Joseph Vitale, Sr. died on July 2, 2021, in Brentwood, CA, after a long illness. He was the oldest son of William & Grace Vitale (nee Hovasse), born on November 23, 1935, in Chelsea MA.
Charlie grew up in Chelsea and Revere MA and was christened at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Chelsea MA where he also sang in the choir. Charlie graduated from Revere HS in 1954 and served in the US Army's 481st Combat Engineers ('54-'57) stationed in Regensburg, Germany. Through the GI Bill he graduated from Suffolk University ('63) with a BS in Business Administration. Charlie moved to the Bay Area to work for Del Monte, Corp. in SF for over 25 years, and later worked for PMG. After Charlie's marriage to Shirley Henry (nee Shaver) in February1989, he assisted her with the operation of her company, Lamorinda Press. In retirement Charlie worked as a golf course ranger.
Charlie was an active member of Trinity Baptist Church in Concord CA, and later Hillside Covenant Church in Walnut Creek CA. Charlie was a devoted family member who enjoyed spending time with extended family throughout the US. Charlie was active with the Lafayette Rotarians, an avid golfer, a lover of music, a fabulous singer, & a phenomenal storyteller. With his fantastic memory and love for adventure, he was both the Vitale family historian and creator of memories. He and his beloved wife Shirley shared a love of travel and hosting family & friends for meals at their home. Wherever Charlie was, there was love, laughter, food, family, and friends.
Charles is survived by his spouse Shirley Henry-Vitale (nee Shaver) of Brentwood CA, brothers William (Caroline) of Billerica MA, Richard (Aleta Falzone) of Topsfield MA, Robert (Mary Jane Cardillo) of Wakefield MA and Leslie (Margaret) of Peabody MA. Charles is survived by his four children from his first marriage: Charles Jr. of Clayton CA, Richard (Suzy) of Silver Spring MD, Cathy (Charles) Lackore of Concord CA, & Robin of Martinez CA. Charles is survived by Shirley's children: Debbie (Douglas) Johnson of Lafayette CA, Shelly (Joe Ruscitti) Henry of Antioch CA, & Derek (Sue) Henry of Lincoln, CA. He is also survived by his 9 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and countless nieces & nephews.
Charles is preceded in death by his father William & mother Grace of Revere MA, brother Harold (Eileen) of Ipswich MA, sister Mary (Henry Peacock) of Revere MA, and sister Denise (Jill Madigan) of Lynn MA.
The funeral service and viewing will be held on July 21 at 11 am at Ouimet Bros. Concord Funeral Chapel, 4125 Clayton Rd., Concord CA 94521. A reception will follow immediately at Hillside Covenant Church, 2060 Magnolia Way, Walnut Creek, CA 94596.
Charlie was deeply loved by all who knew him. His family thanks God for the blessing he was in their lives and rejoice in his homecoming in heaven, free of the bodily pains he endured on earth.
