The biography of Wayne….
On June 27, 1947, Wayne Giles, Jr. was born in the Philippines to his late parents Wayne Sr. and Consuelo (Sally) Acero Giles. They moved to Japan, New Guinea and Texas before arriving and making their home at the Presidio in San Francisco, CA.
In 1951, his mom bought a house in Bernal Heights where 11 years later on May 11, 1962, he got his certificate of citizenship. In 1965, he graduated from Mission High School and got a job at Bank of America.
Wayne was drafted into the Army in September 1968. He got a ‘National Defense Service Medal’ and received a commendation as an ‘Expert Rifle’. On May 16, 1969, after serving in Vietnam, he left the army with a net service of 1 year 9 months and 11 days with an Honorable discharge at Fort Bliss, Texas. He enrolled to the University of El Paso in Texas and got his Bachelor degree in Computer Science.
His brothers then asked him to join them in Hawaii where they formed the ‘Giles Brothers Band’. After several years the band broke up and he returned to the Bay Area and he started his part time umpire career. He also worked at various places: Mass Storage, Chevron, a couple others before he got a temporary job at AT&T and met Maria Tom in 1991. They dated from 1993-1996, when he was working at a place named, Comdisco. In April 1996, they became permanent partners and he got a permanent job at AT&T. Christian, his only son came to live with them on September 12, 1996, when Christian was 26 months old. They finally got legally married on September 12, 2012.
In 2008, Wayne was diagnosed with Metastatic Prostate Cancer. He had surgery and did fine for a while. He also tried several different chemo drug pills which worked for periods and had the intravenous chemo which nearly killed him, but he always got better enough to umpire on the field. In March 2016, he was in the hospital for a week. He knew at that time he was never going on the field again.
Per one of his fellow umpires:
“Wayne had been a fixture in bay area baseball at both the high school and collegiate levels for the past 30-40 years. “Wayner”, as he was known to his friends, was a loving husband, father, and a proud veteran of the United States Military. Throughout his career, Wayne worked high school, Junior College, Division II and Division I baseball. Since coming off of the field, Wayne has served as an evaluator for NCAA at the Division I and II levels as well as the Junior College level. Wayne loved the game of baseball and was proud to play a part in ensuring the integrity of the game was upheld.”
As part of the CCCBUA, in 2013, he won the Dave Nicewonger award.
For the 2017 season, Wayne was given the opportunity to be an umpire evaluator. The last 2 games he evaluated were on Thursday, May 4th at Monterey, then Santa Clara. Thursday late evening, he said he wasn’t feeling well. On the morning of May eighth, he lost his battle with cancer and he took his last breath on this earth.
Wayne leaves behind in this world his wife, Maria, his son, Christian, his 9 siblings and their families, and all his umpire buddies. We will all miss him dearly!
