Sister James Marien Dyer

Sister James Marien Dyer, CSJ, a longtime educator died at San Ramon Regional Medical Center early in the morning of August 5, 2017. She was 72 years of age and in her 53rd year as a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet.
She was born on April 28, 1945 to June Scheuermann and James Dyer in Oakdale, California. She was named Doreen. She attended elementary schools in San Francisco and was a 1963 graduate of Star of the Sea Academy in the city. After graduating from high school, Doreen entered the Community of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in Los Angeles. On August 6, 1964, she was received into the novitiate and given the religious name of Sister James Marien. She made first vows in 1966 and final vows in 1971.
Sister spent her entire religious life as an educator on all levels: elementary, secondary, and college. Twenty-six of these years were spent at Mount St. Mary’s University in Los Angeles, and fifteen years in Concord as principal of Carondelet High School and St. Francis of Assisi Elementary School. Sister loved her students and gave of herself completely as a teacher and principal. At the time of her death, she was looking forward to the beginning of the 2017 – 2018 schoolyear!
Throughout her religious life she enjoyed immensely the time spent with her family. Her mother, father brother and later his family visited her often when she was missioned in Washington and then in Los Angeles. Her years in Concord allowed her to spend meaningful time and holidays with her family. She loved planning surprises for all of them.
She is survived by her brother James (Christine), her nephews James (Cristina), David (Lorena), and her niece Alison (Mark) and six great-nephews and great-nieces (Santiago, Paloma, Agustin, Christopher, Jonas, and Madeline).
Services will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 860 Oak Grove Road, Concord, CA. Visitation will be from 5 – 7pm followed by a Vigil Service on Wednesday, August 16th. Funeral Liturgy will be at 10:30am with a reception to follow on Thursday, August 17th. Burial at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Colma, on Friday, August 18th at 10:30am.
Memorials may be made in memory of Sister James Marien Dyer, CSJ to the Retirement Fund of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet at 11999 Chalon Road, Los Angeles, California 90049.
