Brother Dominic Aquinas Berardelli, F.S.C.


Brother Dominic (John) Aquinas Berardelli, F.S.C. died at the age of 79 on Thursday, December 28, 2017 at Mont La Salle’s Holy Family Community after a bravely fought battle with numerous illnesses. Brother Dominic was born in the Homewood section of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1938, where he attended Holy Rosary Grammar School, and Central District Catholic High School. He entered the Brothers of the Christian Schools at Ammendale, Maryland and received the Religious Habit in 1955. His tour of duty, beginning with the Scholasticate in Elkins Park, Philadelphia and later, Bishop O’Connell High School in Arlington, Virginia was both lengthy and impressive, serving in the Missions, particularly the Philippine Islands starting in 1960. He taught and held various posts at LaSalle High School, Pasadena, where he also was Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Orange, and later at De La Salle North Catholic, Portland He also was part the leadership team of the Mother House in Rome, where he served for a number of years. His duties there took him to Africa, to Australia, and to Asia, as well. Later, he served as Director of Education and Treasurer for the San Francisco District. Brother Dominic especially enjoyed being at Saint Mary’s College of Moraga, where he was loved, honored, and well-respected. His cheerful disposition and engaging smile were the hallmarks of his approach to life and to his many duties over the years.

Brother Dominic was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Charles and Carmella, and his brothers, Adolph, Henry, and Walter. He is survived by his sister, Mary Ann Ahsmann, of Delmont, Pennsylvania, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. His friends and his colleagues are too many to mention, but these, too are his “survivors.”

The first viewing will occur on Friday, January 12, 2017 in the Main Chapel of Saint Mary’s College of Moraga from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. This will be immediately followed by a prayer service and small reception. The Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2017 at Mont La Salle, Napa, with a viewing at 9:15 AM in the Rotunda of the Main Chapel, followed by Mass at 10:00 AM. A procession and burial will follow at the Brothers’ Cemetery.
