Emma Marie Van Beveren

January 10, 1932 to April 6, 2017

Marie passed in the early morning of April 6 after a long and gallant struggle with COPD

Marie was born in upstate New Jersey and moved to Clifton New Jersey as a young girl where she lived with her parents Walter and Lydia Wallenburg. She graduated from Clifton High School where she met and married Wesley Van Beveren, her husband of 65 years. After various moves around the West Coast and East Coast and the birth of her two sons Jim and Jeff, the family settled in Concord California. After 24 years in a career as an accountant with Shell Oil Company Marie retired and moved to Brentwood California in a community known as Somerset, a community she loved and cherished.

Marie lived her life in service to others. She worked as a volunteer and in fact created many organizations and promoted many activities. During the time she worked for Shell Oil she spear headed the creation of the Shell Museum, worked with the Shell Alumni Association and helped to create the Shell Western States Credit Union.

When she contracted COPD she worked as a volunteer with the pulmonary clinic and created a brochure to provide information about the nature of the ailment and how to live with it. Always active and energetic, she pursued her favorite crafts including ceramics, sowing and especially stained glass; she produced and donated beautiful pieces to the community as well as family and friends.
When she retired to Somerset she was very active in supporting Somerset organizations and volunteered wherever there was a need, including helping to restart the Ceramics Club, active with the Kare Bears where she was treasurer for years, and organizing and managing the Somerset Bocce team and supporting the Brentwood community bocce league. She loved the bocce most of all. Marie was a social person, her biggest joy was just to be with people and to hear their stories.

She will be missed most deeply by her family and friends and by the community around her.

She was a most courageous, giving and gallant person, someone who affected the lives of everyone she met.

We love you Marie and we will never forget you. May you rest in peace .

Reception at 2pm April 14 at Somerset 1 Club House, 1675 Crispin Dr, Brentwood CA, 94513.
